September is Recovery Month, and members of the state’s drug and alcohol programs are pushing the role colleges have creating support systems on campus.
Jen Smith is the Secretary of Drugs and Alcohol Programs in Pennsylvania and she says college students are at greater risk of substance abuse.
“In 2020, nationally the percentage of people with a substance abuse disorder was highest among those 18 to 25 years old” Smith said. “It equated to 8.2 million people. That’s according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.”
She says colleges should be creating programs that help prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery support.
