State health officials say last week’s “opioid awareness campaign” was successful.
Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine says the week culminated with Thursday’s free distribution of more than 6,100 kits statewide of the opioid overdose reversal drug Naloxone.
“The event was very successful. It exceeded our expectations,” Levine said.
The state had anticipated distributing 5,000 kits. In Butler County, the drug was distributed at the state health center on Brugh Avenue. Within four hours of the giveaway starting, the center had reportedly run out of the drug. It’s unclear exactly how many kits were given away locally.
Dr. Levine reminds state residents that Naloxone, covered by Medicaid, Medicare and commercial insurance, is available at PA pharmacies. You don’t need a prescription.
