Democrats in the State House are calling for the passage of legislation that they say would make it easier for election workers to count mail-in and absentee ballots.
The bill would give the workers a chance to open the two envelopes the mail-in ballots are in prior to Election Day morning—it’s known as a process called pre-canvassing.
“More than two years ago the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania came forward with a simple ask: to change the law to allow them to prepare the ballots before Election Day,” Democratic State Representative Ryan Bizzaro of Erie said. “They’re not looking to count them. They’re looking to prepare them for smoother results and faster counting.”
He says the legislation however is being held up by Republicans in the State House.
