The Pennsylvania House has given approval to a state budget, however the process is still being held up in the state senate.
The bipartisan total budget is $45.2 billion, with over $2 billion set aside for the state’s rainy day fund.
Lawmakers say the budget makes record investments in environmental protections, education, and public safety.
The House voted overwhelmingly in favor of the budget. However, local State Representative Aaron Bernstine was one of 20 who voted against the budget, saying that he would not support the increase in spending.
Rep. Marci Mustello, who represents portions of Butler County, voted in favor of the bill.
“This is a responsible budget which has bipartisan support. This budget includes no new taxes,” Mustello said in a statement.
One of the highlights of the bill, according to Mustello, is the funding for education.
“Butler County is blessed to have outstanding school districts and a community college. In order to keep them running at peak efficiency and to give students the best education possible, we must do our best to fully fund schools,” Mustello said. “This budget supports educational opportunities for children whether they attend a traditional public school, public charter school or a private/parochial school.”
The Senate is expected to take up votes on the budget later today.
Governor Tom Wolf says he supports the budget that was passed by the House.
