A program to help veterans become teachers in one year at Slippery Rock University has received additional state funding.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education has received $1.6 million in federal grant money to extend the Troops to Teachers program for five more years.
This program is designed to provide accelerated training toward teaching certifications for veterans with bachelor degrees. The grant is designed to fill positions with the greatest need including STEM subjects and world languages.
After initial funding was secured last December, 30 veterans have either enrolled or shown interest in taking advantage of the program this year which starts with summer online courses. The veterans will then be matched with a cooperating teacher in the Pittsburgh Public Schools to get classroom training.
