Slippery Rock University’s Dr. George Mihalik announced Wednesday he will retire after 28 years as The Rock’s head coach.
Mihalik led The Rock to back-to-back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships in 2014 and 2015, and to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals this season. The head coach since 1988, Mihalik ended the season ranked fourth among all active Division-II head coaches with 197 wins at SRU.
He was honored as the PSAC Coach of the Year for the team’s success in 2015. Slippery Rock’s season ended last week with a 12-2 record, tying the 1998 team which was also led by Mihalik, for the most wins in school history.
A former stand-out quarterback, he had been a part of the SRU football program for 43 of the last 44 seasons.
Dr. Mihalik is also retiring as a professor in SRU’s Department of Safety Management within the College of Business.
