A Slippery Rock University vice president has filed a federal lawsuit claiming he was discriminated against and ultimately blocked from being SRU’s president last year, and later at Clarion University.
Amir Mohammadi, 59, filed a complaint Thursday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Mohammadi alleges that discriminatory acts and retaliation plagued him being considered for SRU’s next president, despite a three-decade career in academia and leadership at Slippery Rock.
Named as defendants in the suit are the university, the State System of Higher Education, and Robert S. Taylor, a Slippery Rock trustee and member of SRU’s presidential search committee.
“When Dr. Mohammadi surfaced as a leading candidate, the search became irregular and Mr. Taylor tried to thwart him from being recommended to be President,” according to the suit. “Mr. Taylor vaguely warned other members not to advance Dr. Mohammadi’s name but declined to explain why.”
Mohammadi is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Iran and immigrated to this country in the 1908s while in college. He is a Muslim. In March 2015, he was named Vice President for Finance and Administrative Affairs and Advancement Services, and has also since served as Vice President for University Advancement.
