A member of the Slippery Rock University track team is going to run from San Francisco to New York City.
Ellie Pearson of Elk County will participate in 4K For Cancer, which is an annual summer trek by 180 college students to cycle or run 4,500 miles across America to raise money to help fight cancer. The event is a program of The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.
“I started their training program once my season was over and then I’ve just been running their mileage,” Pearson said. “They do a good job of keeping you building up your mileage and not doing it too fast.”
The 4K will run from June 17-Aug. 4. Pearson was motivated to participate and help those affected by cancer when her aunt lost her battle with cancer in 2016.
“Everyone who wants to participate has to go through a couple phone interviews and then once they see that you’d be a good candidate, you have to fundraise $4,500 to do it,” Pearson said.
That amount of money is required to give out scholarships to young adults affected by cancer.
