Slippery Rock University will be recognized for sports programs that include athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics Pennsylvania has chosen SRU as its first Unified Sports Center of Excellence. The honor will be conveyed to the university as well as a professor and an instructor during a ceremony Nov. 15 at the Smith Center Student Ballroom.
High school students with and without intellectual disabilities are able to train and compete on the same team through the Interscholastic Unified Sports Program. SRU launched their version of this program in 2015 and has doubled the number of student participants this year in events like track and field.
The adapted physical activity program at SRU prepares students for careers managing fitness programs for those with disabilities. More than 20 SRU graduate students work as volunteer coaches in the Unified Sports program.
