Slippery Rock University defensive end Marcus Martin has been named a first-team Academic All-American. He is just the fourth Rock football player to receive first-team honors, and is the only junior defensive player in the nation to receive the honor. Martin was named to the second team last year as a sophomore. The West Mifflin graduate, who is a senior academically, has maintained a 3.58 grade point average as a safety management major, while carrying a business administration minor.
Rock men’s soccer redshirt junior defencer Patrick Sullivan was named the the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s 2016 All-Atlantic Region team. Sullivan is a Pine-Richland graduate.
The Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team lost 71-69 to Malone University in Canton, Ohio last night. Freshmen LeeAnn Gibson from Karns City and Brooke Hinderliter of Redbank Valley made their second start of the season together. Gibson had seven points and six rebounds. Hinderliter added seven points. The Rock fell to 3-4 overall.
The Butler high school basketball “Meet the Players” night will be held tonight at the Butler high gymnasium. The Butler boys and girls varsity and junior varsity players will be introduced. The free event begins at 7pm.
