A secretary for the South Butler School District is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the district’s athletic department.
Paula Vaughan, 59, of Sarver was arrested by State Police on Friday but the investigation into her alleged theft started early last year. According to a police criminal complaint, in March, then-South Butler Superintendent David Zupsic and Director of Business Affairs Paul Slomer Jr. called police and said they while attempting to speak with Vaughan about the records she was keeping for certain accounts, she admitted to stealing over $13,000.
An investigation has revealed the alleged thefts happened between June and December of 2016 while Vaughan was working as a secretary for the athletic director. She allegedly confessed to stealing cash from the student activities fund and then attempting to cover it up with money she collected through pay-to-play, drivers’ education and summer recreation fees, which belonged to the district’s general fund account.
Vaughn was immediately suspended when the district first learned of the alleged theft back in March of this year. She is facing two felony theft charges. State police say their investigation is ongoing.
