An additional school police officer has been temporarily added to the school police unit overseeing security at the South Butler County School District after several incidents last week.
Superintendent David Foley said state police had been called to the district several times last week. In a letter to parents, Foley said:
-A knife was found in the middle school. District officials were able to quickly determine the owner of the knife, according to the letter.
-A high school student was found with a knife. Building administration and school police immediately confiscated the knife.
-And a threat was made toward the middle school and a middle school student on Tuesday, Feb. 20. This threat was taken seriously and School Police contacted state police, according to the district. Officials did not elaborate on exactly what the “threat” was.
The district did say state police were called in response to each of the incidents and the students found responsible were charged and also disciplined.
“Appropriate action with each incident has occurred and police action and school discipline have been issued in accordance with state law and district policy,” according to the superintendent’s letter to parents. “The health, safety and welfare of students and staff are the utmost importance in each of our schools.”
