The South Butler School Board plans to raise taxes to help offset an anticipated deficit for the 2016-17 school year.
The board voted by a 6 to 3 margin Wednesday night for a budget with $36.5 million in expenses and a one mil tax increase. State pension contributions have increased and capital project expenses that were postponed this year are included.
The new tax rate in the district will be 94.275 mils. Even with the additional $168,000 from the increased tax revenue, South Butler still anticipates needing to use almost $2 million from the general fund to balance the budget.
A one mil tax increase will cost the average taxpayer in South Butler about $21.
