The South Butler School Board has taken steps to try to control rising healthcare costs.
At a meeting Wednesday night, the board voted to withdraw from the Midwestern Health Combine, effective July 1, 2016, and appoint First Niagara as a benefits consultant.
According to district Solicitor Tom Breth, notice of the action needed to be given by Oct. 1 of this year. District employees will continue to receive Highmark benefits but the structure of the plans and the organization overseeing the plans will change.
Breth says this decision is the result of a 20-month process by the board to evaluate and interview close to 30 different consultants.
This decision is part of an effort to find common ground in bargaining with teachers, support personnel and custodians, while still meeting the financial objectives of the board.
