The South Butler School Board has approved a tax increase to help offset an anticipated deficit of nearly $2 million for the 2016-17 school year.
The board passed a motion to increase the tax rate by 1-mill. The new millage rate for South Butler is 94.275 mils. This increase will bring the district an estimated $167,000 in additional revenue.
The district will operate under a budget with $36.5 million in expenses for next school year. This figure includes an increase in state pension contributions as well as capital project expenses.
Because of the deficit, money from the general fund is needed to balance the budget, leaving that account with about $4 million at the end of next school year.
