Butler City Council will postpone a vote on part of their Streetscape Project in order to further investigate dissatisfaction expressed by members of a city organization.
City councilmember Jeff Smith planned to propose the revision of a policy regarding who has responsibility for the commemorative benches and street furniture that sit on Main Street.
A 10-year-old policy allows for the Shade Tree Commission to administer these items, many of which were gifted to the city by donors in honor of loved ones. Smith would like to see City Council in control of those benches to better facilitate the streetscape project.
Several members of the Shade Tree Commission submitted a letter to Council, and attended Tuesday’s city meeting, to voice their opposition to the city taking over the handling of these benches. Some also opposed the job Smith has been doing as liaison to the commission.
Last month, Smith suggested asking the people who donated the memorial benches if they cold be placed in parks, on a different bench, or if the plaques could be placed on a tree.
“There are about 37 benches with plaques on them (on Main Street),” Smith said during a city council meeting in July. “That needs to get worked through. You can’t do a streetscape project and work around 37 benches.”
The motion has been tabled until next month.
The city streetscape project will include moving utility lines on Main Street underground, new street lighting and planting trees.
