About 100 people attended Thursday night’s Butler City Council meeting and many of them spoke about their feelings on an anti-discrimination ordinance.
The meeting was moved from City Council Chambers across the street to the city fire station to accommodate the large number of people.
Fifteen people addressed council about the ordinance, which was originally proposed in 2012 to create a Human Rights Authority within the city. Six of them who spoke were in favor of the ordinance, including a representative of AARP. A local Jewish leader pledged that those in favor of the ordinance would not go away as they did four years ago.
Nine of the people who spoke were against the ordinance including City Treasurer John Grenci and several local clergy members who believe that the ordinance would lead to discrimination against Christians. About half of the audience stood when asked by one speaker who was opposed to the ordinance.
According to Councilman Mike Walter, a motion concerning the ordinance will be placed on next month’s agenda.
