Some Butler Township residents are expressing frustration with the recent change of waste disposal providers, while administrators try to smooth the transition.
Former Butler Township Manager Ed Kirkwood was among the nine residents who spoke to the township board of commissioners during a meeting Monday evening.
“We’re subject to fines with the size of the cart because I don’t have room for them in my garage. If I put them outside, it costs me $105 per day,” Kirkwood said to the commissioners Monday. He was inferring the new trash containers are larger than what the township ordinance permits.
The district’s solicitor said she plans to look at the exact language of the contract in relation to current township ordinances to determine if any amendments need to be made.
Butler Township hired Waste Management last year for a five-year contract for waste disposal services after the company submitted a lower big than previous contractor Vogel Disposal.
According to current Butler Township Manager Tom Knights, the contract with Waste Management was written in a way that all residents would receive a 90-gallon garbage container at first, but a resident could request a smaller container if they choose.
