National Fire Prevention Week continues through Saturday.
The focus this year is smoke alarms and reminding residents to replace them every 10 years. The theme is “Don’t Wait: Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”
Butler City Firefighter Don Crawford encourages homeowners to check their smoke alarms monthly to ensure they’re working properly and to change the batteries in them every time you change your clocks during Daylight Savings Time.
“Smoke detectors are your first line of defense,” Crawford said. “Yes, the fire department will respond but I’d rather see everyone standing outside in the front yard safe before we show up because they were alerted by an alarm.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of every five fire deaths occur in homes where there are no smoke alarms or the alarms were not working properly.
