A Slippery Rock man is suing after he says a New Castle police officer violently and brutally arrested him last month, violating his human rights.
Perry Lawry, 49, on Thursday sued the city of New Castle and two police officers in a federal civil rights complaint over claims of excessive force and false arrest. One of the officers was fired last week for violating the department’s use-of-force policy during Lawry’s arrest.
The arrest happened in late April after police were sent to a New Castle apartment for a domestic disturbance. Officers allege Lawry was drunk, resisting arrest and going for a knife. In the suit, Lawry’s lawyer says he wasn’t going for a weapon and was wrongfully hurt by officers, at one time having his head smashed off the floor repeatedly.
The suit, which is asking for unspecified damages, alleges Lawry suffered “significant physical injuries” that have resulted in him not being able to work.
