The Slippery Rock Unviersity football team came back from a 14-point deficit on Saturday to beat visiting New Haven by a final of 31-28.
The Rock jumped out to an early 14-0 lead before New Haven tied the game in the second quarter. Slippery Rock than trailed by 14 in the fourth, before scoring 17 straight in the fourth quarter. Saturday’s win was the first career win for first year Rock Head Coach Shawn Lutz.
Leading SRU offensively was running back Shamar Greene, who ran for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Don King III, who threw for 100 yards and one touchdown. After Saturday’s effort Shamar Greene needs just 17 more yards to break the career rushing record at SRU.
Defensively, Eastern Michigan transfer Anthony Zappone had an interception, one and a half sacks, and 11 tackles. Defensive End Marcus Martin also collected 11 tackles, and one and a half sacks, which gives him the school record for career sacks (curretly has 33 sacks), and puts Martin within half of a sack of the conference record. Butler graduate Bob Vernick also collected 10 tackles.
The Rock travels to West Chester on Saturday for a rematch of the 2015 PSAC Championship. You can catch Saturday’s game, staring with pregame coverage at 11:30am on The Rock Station 97.7FM and online at 977rocks.com. Kickoff is set for 12pm.
