The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 to complete their three-game series Thursday afternoon. Rookie Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes tossed seven no-hit innings. He struck out 11 before leaving after throwing 99 pitches. Colin Holderman allowed the Brewers their first hit in the eighth inning. Holderman loaded the bases in that inning, but did not allow a run. Aroldis Chapman closed the game with a perfect ninth inning with nine pitches.
Skenes lowered his ERA to 1.90 through 11 starts after yesterday’s shutout and improved to 6-0 this season. He had retired the final 16 batters he faced, striking out eight in that stretch. He also set a Pirates record with at least seven strikeouts in eight consecutive starts.
The Bucs only run came on a Yasmani Grandal double in the seventh inning, scoring Jack Suwinski.
The Pirates open a series with the Chicago White Sox tonight at 8:10pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 7:45pm.
The Bucs and White Sox play back-to-back 2:10pm games Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s pre-game is 1:45pm. Sunday’s pre-game includes the Ben Cherington Show beginning at 1:10pm.
The Pirates enter tonight’s game three games under .500 at 45-48, but have moved to within 2-1/2 games of a Wild Card spot. Since June 1st, the Bucs are 20-17. The White Sox enter this weekend’s series with the worst record in baseball at 27-68.
