Some organizations already want you to be thinking about recycling your Christmas trees.
There are several locations in Butler County that offer free tree recycling, according to department of recycling and waste management in Butler County. Some locations require you to drop off your tree; others will pick up your tree curbside.
All services require that your tree is completely free of all decorations and any plastic bag used to transport it.
The locations that offer tree recycling services are:
-Back To Nature: 840 Mercer Road, Butler. 724-287-7921. Free drop-off. Pickup service available for a fee. Runs through Jan. 31, 2018.
-Butler Township: Curbside collection for Butler Township residents only on regular trash collection day. No fee. Runs Dec. 26-Jan. 31. Trees taller than 7 ft. must be cut in sections.
-Harrisville Borough: Wick Road maintenance garage will be a collection site for trees from Jan. 2-Jan. 7 for free. Call 724-735-2222 for more information.
-Penn Township: Will collect trees at their road department building and fire department. Call 724-586-1165.
-Seneca Landfill: 421 Hartmann Road, Evans City, PA. Call 724-625-9000. Drop off only through Jan. 31, 2018. $5 fee per tree. Ask for directions at the scale house when you enter site. Senecalandfill.com.
-Slippery Rock Community Park: 320 N. Main St, Slippery Rock. Call 724-794-8180. Free drop off only through Jan. 2, 2018. Drop off site will be clearly marked and trees must be placed in that area.
The county recycling department says some other communities may have a curbside pickup program for their residents. You should call your municipal building for details.
Officials say recycled Christmas trees can be used in several ways including to create brush piles that provide a resting place for birds and small animals.
