As the victims of the Norfolk Southern train derailment receive reimbursements, two senators are working on lowering their tax rate.
Senator Bob Casey has penned a letter to the IRS and Treasury Department asking that the victims of the derailment be exempt from being taxed on reimbursements from the federal government.
Casey cited that reimbursement is not income as reason for not taxing victims.
While State Senator Doug Mastriano has proposed house bill 1149 which would be a tax deduction for Pennsylvanians who receive payment. Ohio has established a similar deduction for victims already.
Earlier this month Norfolk announced a $600 million settlement with the victims of the derailment in a class action suit.
