Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey is urging the Biden Administration to take action with trade laws that would help protect a local manufacturer.
Casey says Cleveland-Cliffs (formerly AK Steel) is the only grain-oriented electrical steel, also known as GOES, producer in the United States. That steel is instrumental in building transformers.
Casey argues that a recently released report found that other GOES products were being imported into the U.S., and that it posed a national security risk to the country.
The current law allows Mexico and Canada to import GOES and sell it in the U.S. Casey says neither country currently produces GOES, but instead imports it from Russia and China.
He and other senators from Ohio are in favor of negotiating with Mexico and Canada to reduce their exports of GOES.
