Rick Schontz will attend his final meeting as a member of Butler City Council Thursday.
“My goal coming into the job was just to try and make a difference and to serve people,” Schontz told our newsroom. “Many people thought that my goal was to ascend to the mayorship and that was never my plan. My plan was just to serve. I always wanted to do it and I feel honored. This has been a special six and a half years for me and I appreciate the people giving me that opportunity.”
Schontz is a former teacher and served as his father’s campaign manager during several mayoral contests before joining council and serving as Director of Streets and Public Improvements.
Schontz is stepping down from council and moving to Butler Township in order to devote more time to caring for his parents and being able to visit his children more. Schontz sees a bright future ahead for the city.
“You see some really good things happening on Main Street,” he said. “I think that will continue. The strength of your city, however, is in the neighborhoods. We’ve got to continue making the neighborhoods safe for people so they want to move in and raise their families here.”
Schontz has no definite plans to be active in Butler Township government or administration but says he is open to the possibility.
