Many of us will spend hours in the kitchen today, with the stove on. You might think there’s no way to be energy efficient but experts say you can.
Ken Maleski with Central Electric Cooperative- which serves a portion of Butler County- offers some distinct tips to help you save energy, and money.
-Watch that Thermostat: Maleski suggests turning your heat down, below where you usually set it, on Thanksgiving Day because all of the cooking heat and number of extra people in your home will bring the inside temperature up
-Cook Everything at the Same Time: Use the electric oven more efficiently by coking more at once. Or, schedule items to go into the oven when removing other items. Reheating ovens at a later time frame uses a lot of energy.
-Don’t Peak. Every time you open the oven door the oven temp can lose up to 25 degrees of heat. Instead, use your oven light to check to see how things are cooking up
-Use your mic. Microwaves use 50 percent less energy than most ovens.
-Pack the dishwasher. Don’t run the dishwasher unless it’s full. You could also eliminate the drying cycle to save energy and money.
-Cool leftovers before refrigerating. Don’t place hot dishes in the fridge because it makes the fridge work harder.
