Earlier this fall, a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot his 11-year-old brother in the leg in Butler County. Incidents like that are unfortunately not rare, leading the organization Safe Kids Pennsylvania to offer advice to protect children from the dangers posed by guns in the home.
Specialist Ashley Graves says any guns inside a house should be locked in a location not accessible to children and unloaded.
With an estimated 1 in 3 homes with children under the age of 17 having guns in them, Graves says it’s also important those firearms have gun locks on them. It’s also suggested you lock up the ammunition in a separate location.
Last weekend, a 3-year-old girl in Philadelphia shot herself in the leg with her father’s gun. Both the girl’s father and grandmother are now facing charges.
