Mold remediation efforts continue in the South Butler County School District.
Nearly $33,000 has been spent so far on air quality improvements, including 44 tests, intensive cleaning, the purchase of 30 dehumidifiers, and the replacement of ceiling tile in nine classrooms.
According to a representative from an air quality firm, there are no mandated levels about how much mold is OK in any given area since everyone has a different tolerance to spores in the air. However, last summer was very humid, which resulted in mold issues in many school facilities, not just South Butler.
The district plans to continue to test, as needed, with the possibility of contracting with an HVAC engineer to help come up with a plan to reduce humidity in South Butler facilities.
Mold was initially discovered in a classroom at the high school on the first day of school in the fall of 2018.
