After a year interrupted by a nearly three-week-long teacher strike, students at South Butler are beginning a new school year today.
South Butler’s Superintendent is Dr. David Foley.
“I’m thrilled (to get back),” Foley said in an interview on Tuesday. He also talked about last year’s long drawn-out teacher negotiations.
“I came in on the tail end of those negotiations and there are great people on both sides. The board members are terrific people. There are teachers who are very passionate about those labor negotiations and they’re good people. I get to see a little bit of behind the scenes with both groups; it was a challenging time for both groups, and we’re just excited to get the year started,” he said.
Nearly 2,300 students will return to South Butler this year, including about 150 kindergarteners.
South Butler students will have a chance to utilize some new technology, including individual Chromebooks for sixth through 12th graders. But Foley says having technology available is not everything when it comes to learning.
“It’s really important, I think, when you have technology in the school that we understand that technology is not replacing the nuts and bolts of teaching and learning, but instead are great tools to enhance what we’re doing,” he said.
Although South Butler facilities are in great shape, according to Foley, the district is in the preliminary stages of possibly engaging a feasibility study in order to determine how buildings could be “freshened up.”
