The South Butler County School Board and administrators are working with the company that provides them with substitute teachers to determine what can be done about an ongoing shortfall.
The board heard a presentation during a school board meeting Wednesday from representatives of Kelly Education Staffing (KES), as well as from a parent concerned about the situation.
KES has been handling the district’s substitute teacher, secretary and paraprofessional needs for the past four years. Currently, 118 substitutes are registered to be able to be called when a South Butler teacher is off. The fill rate this year has been about 80 percent, which has resulted in some less than ideal educational situations.
KES is trying to increase the pool of potential subs through recruitment strategies. Superintendent Dr. David Foley pointed out South Butler’s per day pay rate has been increased this year from $80 to $90, but he agrees that more must be done to address this issue. Foley said he would support pay bonuses for subs who fill in a certain number of days with the district.
