The South Butler School Board will fight a large fine they anticipate receiving as a result of the recent teachers’ strike.
According to Superintendent Dr. David Foley, South Butler will be fined about $60,000 by the state because they are planning to have students attend school for 179 days instead of the state-mandated 180.
The reason for this decision involves a variety of complex factors, including the day count done by the Department of Education that determined when the teachers’ strike was required to end. The board says it did not factor in Act-80 days that had already been used.
Also, teachers are required to work exactly 187 days under their current contract so Friday, May 25 has been designated as a day-off for students and staff. June 14 will be an early dismissal day for students and a full-day for staff and June 15 will again be an early dismissal day for students but will still also be graduation day.
The South Butler Board plans to legally challenge the validity of this fine because they believe circumstances were beyond board control.
