The Kansas City Royals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 last night, handing Gerrit Cole his fourth loss of the season. Sloppy defense set the Royals up for three runs in the eighth inning which decided the game. Starling Marte, Jung Ho Kang and Sean Rodriguez each had two hits for the Pirates last night in the loss. Marte had what appeared to be a home run taken away in the second inning. The ball hit near the top of the fence and bounced into the bullpen, but was ruled a ground-rule double and he was left stranded at third base at the end of the inning. Cole allowed two earned runs on five hits while pitching into the eighth inning. His record is now 13-4.
