Kittanning-based Rosebud Mining furloughed nearly half its workforce and idled 20 mines because of decreased demand due to unseasonably warm weather.
Company officials say they hope to bring the 429 miners temporarily out of work back in February.
Record warmth across the Northeast and other regions in November and December brought below-normal demand from power plants accustomed to burning lots of coal for electricity.
In the Butler County area, Rosebud operates the Long Run mine in western Armstrong County, the Logansport mine in southwestern Armstrong County and the Beaver Valley mine in Beaver County.
