The Slippery Rock University football team is officially receiving votes in the NCAA Division II preseason national poll released Monday by the American Football Coaches Association. The AFCA poll is widely regarded as the official Division II national ranking that is used by the NCAA throughout the season. This marks the fourth straight year the Slippery Rock program has been mentioned in the preseason national poll. The Rock were ranked 11th entering the 2016 season and have reached as high as No. 7 in the national poll during the last four seasons.
Slippery Rock is one of 12 teams from Super Region One to be listed in the preseason poll. The top ranked team from Super Region One is defending regional champion Shepherd at No. 7. The top two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division rivals of SRU, California (Pa.) and Indiana (Pa.), are ranked eighth and ninth, respectively. Slippery Rock is scheduled to face five teams listed in the preseason poll during the upcoming season, beginning at home against West Chester Sept. 9th.
