The Slippery Rock University football team dropped their second game in a row on Saturday, falling to Edinboro in the final seconds of Homecoming by a final of 37-35.
The Green and White jumped out to an early 10-3 lead before Edinboro built a 31-13 lead early in the third quarter. During that stretch, The Rock lost starting quarterback Don King III to an injury late in the first half, and lost backup quarterback Nathaniel Musselman to injury early in the 3rd quarter. However, freshman quarterback Augustus Necastro led the team to a near comeback, as the Rock built a 36-31 lead with one minute to go. Edinboro, however, was able to drive the length of the field and score after The Rock was called for pass interference as time expired.
Necastro finished the game with 187 yards on 17 completions and two scores. Running back Isiah Neely finished with 135 yards rushing and one score, along with five receptions for nearly 70 yards. Drew Scales also had eight receptions for 78 yards and one score. Defensively, Kyle Hall had three of SRU’s four interceptions, and Anthony Zappone led the team in tackles with nine.
With the loss, Slippery Rock’s second in a row, their winning streak of 20 consecutive home games was snapped. The streak began during the 2013 football season.
The Rock will be back in action this Saturday, as they will travel to Clarion. You can catch all of Saturday’s action, starting with pregame coverage at 11:30am on The Rock Station 97.7FM and online at 977rocks.com. Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for noon.
