The worst of the latest snowfall appears to be over as the Winter Storm Warning for the Butler County area has expired.
Local road crews have been out since early Wednesday morning working to keep up with changing conditions as best they can.
PennDOT District 10 Maintenance Manager Mike Mattis said his entire fleet of 42 trucks took to the roads at 1 a.m. to pre-treat before the snow started falling.
“It started about 3:30 a.m. and it snowed about one inch an hour,” Mattis said late Wednesday morning. “We got a lot of snow.”
Now that the system has moved out, it’s time for clean-up.
“We’ve now switched to clean-up,” Mattis said. “We have a lot of clean-up to do. We’ll be working until late tonight.”
This is likely the biggest winter storm we’ve seen so far this season because of the temperatures and the timing. Temperatures have been hovering around 32 degrees, meaning some areas have seen all snow, some have seen a wintry mix of snow, freezing rain and sleet, and some have seen rain which freezes on contact with the ground.
Conditions and snow totals vary greatly depending on where you are geographically.
The National Weather Service expects between 3 and 8 inches of snow to have been left behind across the area depending on exact geographic location.
