An idea nearly a decade ago by a woman who saw her best friend battle cancer has turned into more than a quarter-of-a-million dollars in local charitable donations.
“At age 35, my best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Riding For The Cure organizer Lynda Kerr said in an interview with Butler Radio. “She had a great job with great benefits, but she would still tell me about the (outrageous) costs of the treatments and the trips to the doctors. Because of her, we decided to get a group together and try to help raise money for the everyday needs and expenses of cancer patients.”
The fundraiser centers around a yearly motorcycle ride- held the last weekend in July in Butler County. This past Saturday, the group raised $52,000, which will all stay local to help Butler and Armstrong residents battling cancer.
Kerr said the group was recently able to pay off the co-pays of four local patients for their treatments. The co-pays totaled $9,000.
In the past eight years of the event, the group has donated more than $275,000.
