Many local residents showed up at Tuesday night’s Butler City Council meeting to voice opinions about a plan to rezone a city neighborhood.
A public hearing was held to get feedback on an ordinance that would amend the zoning of all properties within the designated Ritts Historic and Architectural District, to R1. This plan would limit the use to single-family residences only.
This area currently contains properties designated R1, as well as R2, R3, and C3, which permits other conditional uses including, but not limited to, multi-family residences. Although a couple people did speak in favor of the ordinance, a majority of speakers were opposed to the additional restrictions even though multi-family properties in the district could stay as they are now.
The Butler City Zoning Board engaged in a lengthy discussion on the proposed ordinance at their last meeting and ended up issuing a recommendation for council to reject in favor of a compromise involving R2 designation for all property in the district not already R1. This rezoning is not essential to the historic designation. Council is expected to vote on the ordinance at their meeting Thursday.
