A new report says Pennsylvania needs to do more to keep kids away from cigarettes.
The report from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids ranks Pennsylvania 29th nationally in funding of programs that prevent kids from smoking or help smoker kick the habit.
Spokesman John Schachter says in short, Pennsylvania needs to do more.
“The Center for Disease Control has a specific spending target for each state to fully fund these programs,” Schachter said. “Pennsylvania is only spending 9.9 percent of what the CDC recommends.”
The CDC says Pennsylvania should be spending $140 million a year.
One bright spot in the report is the $1 per pack increase in the state’s cigarette tax.
