In a report released by the United States Coast Guard, the year 2016 was shown to be more dangerous than recent years in regards to recreational boating.
The report, which was released last week, indicates that recreational boating fatalities nationwide in 2016 totaled 701. That total was a nearly 12 percent increase from 2015. Also in 2016, the total number of accidents (2,903) was an 11 percent increase from the previous year.
Captain Scott Johnson, the Chief of the Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety, says that these statistics should serve as a stark reminder of how important boating safety education is. He also reminds boaters to wear a life jacket at all times.
