Congressman Mike Kelly is introducing a new bill that looks to secure the future of the grain-oriented electrical steel industry.
Kelly’s bill is called “The Distribution Transformer Efficiency and Supply Chain Reliability Act.”
Kelly says the bill would “bolster the U.S. transformer supply chain by setting new realistic energy efficiency standards.”
Many transformers are made from grain-oriented electrical steel, which is produced by Cleveland-Cliffs in Butler.
The bill is in reaction to a proposal by the Biden Administration that would mandate the use of amorphous metal cores instead of grain-oriented electrical steel in transformers.
The bill has bipartisan support by other Pennsylvania lawmakers.
