The state House of Representatives has unanimously passed a bill introduced by a local lawmaker that increases the penalties for distracted driving accidents.
Rep. Jaret Gibbons, who represents a portion of Butler County, introduced Daniel’s Law in honor of Daniel Gallatin of Lawrence County who was killed in 2013 while riding his motorcycle when a driver who was texting while driving struck him from behind.
Under current state law, drivers found to be texting while driving are hit with a summary offense and a $50 fine. The violation does not add points onto a driver’s license or be recorded on the driver’s record. Gibbons’ legislation would bring the penalty for distracted driving accidents in line with drunk driving offenses, such as homicide by vehicle and aggravated assault while under the influence.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
