Our region remains among the most polluted metro areas in the U.S., according to the American Lung Association’s annual “State of the Air” report released today.
The Pittsburgh-New Castle-Weirton metropolitan area is in the top 10 cities most polluted by year-round particle pollution.
The metro area includes 12 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia. Specific calculations were not done in Butler County but our surrounding counties were looked at, including Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer.
Overall, the report found that was progress was made nationally in reducing ozone and annual particle pollution, primarily due to the shutdown of coal-fired power plants and the retirement of diesel engines.
