The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 Sunday afternoon at PNC Park. The victory gave the Rays two of three games in their weekend series in Pittsburgh.
Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes allowed a home run on the first pitch he threw yesterday, but held the Rays scoreless for seven innings after that. Colin Holderman allowed two runs in the eighth which decided the game. It was the first time Holderman allowed an earned run in ten appearances.
Skenes allowed six hits total. He walked one and struck out eight in reaching the seventh inning for the first time in his career.
Bryan Reynolds had two hits, including his 12th home run of the season. He now has had a hit in 20 consecutive games.
The Rays defeated the Pirates 10-3 on Friday night, with the Pirates winning Saturday’s game 4-3. The Bucs open a three-game series in Cincinnati tonight. First pitch is 7:10pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:45pm.
The Pirates had to place closer David Bednar on the 15-day Injured List over the weekend after he developed tightness in his side during pre-game warm-ups Saturday.
