The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is warning of a phone scam that is circulating.
Officials from the PUC say they received more than 70 phone calls one day last week from people who said they received suspicious phone calls that appeared to be coming from the PUC.
The scammers claim to be from the PUC and tell individuals that a utility has reported a request to switch the consumer to another energy supplier. They then ask for a cancellation fee over the phone.
PUC officials say they will never make direct calls to consumers to demand payment or threaten to end services.
If you receive a call like this, immediately hang up and call police.
