The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is blaming a record high number of power outages last year on trees brought down by severe storms.
The state’s 11 electric distribution companies- including West Penn Power which serves Butler County- reported a total of 50 major outage events in 2017- which is the highest number since data started to be collected in the early 90s and over twice as many as 2016.
West Penn itself had 11 of those major outages.
In a report, the utility commission attributed all of the outages to storms or inclement weather.
State utility regulators are advising utility companies to increase tree-trimming and infrastructure replacement projects.
