In the wake of Hurricane Florence, Pennsylvania State Police are urging residents to be on alert for fake charities that promise to help storm victims.
Police say the solicitation fraud could occur in many forms- through email, by phone or even pop-up charities. Criminals know people rush to financially help those in need when a natural disaster happens, so they try to take advantage, according to police.
PSP reminds residents to do their research before giving to a charity, and to not assume that charities posted on social media or on the Internet are legitimate.
The Federal Trade Commission does recommend several websites where you can check if a charity is legit- including give.org and charitywatch.org. If you think you’ve been the target of a scam, make sure to report it by filing a complaint.
