A group of about 15 people gathered in front of Congressman Mike Kelly’s business on Thursday protesting a national tax bill.
Gabe Lytle of Armstrong County was one of those standing outside Kelly’s Penn Township dealership off Route 8 South.
“I am protesting because Rep. Kelly is in support of a tax bill that is going to hurt the working class,” Lytle said.
The event was organized on Facebook before the vote with many people carrying signs asking Rep. Kelly to change his mind about supporting the bill. Katherine Lalonde of Lancaster Township, Butler County also attended the protest to contend that the bill’s proposed tax breaks will not impact the people who are most in need.
The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act did pass the U.S. House of Representatives late Thursday afternoon by a 227-205 vote. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-3rd, voted in favor of it.
“This is a jobs bill,” Rep. Kelly said in a statement released after the vote on Thursday. “This is a revenue-raiser for us. This is about bringing people back home. This is about more take-home pay for every hardworking American guy and gal who’s out there who gets up every day to do one thing and that is to protect their families and work in the best interest of their country.”
The bill will now be considered by the U.S. Senate.
