A new proposed law would see redistricting in Pennsylvania done by an independent commission.
After every 10 years U.S. Census data is used to redraw State Senate, State House, and congressional districts. Now state representatives Republican Mark Gillen and Democrat Steve Samuelson have proposed house Bill 1776 that would establish an independent Redistricting Commission.
The 11-member commission would be free of legislative influence and would prohibit favoring individual parties or candidates. The drawing of maps would prioritized measurable mapping standards and more transparent public hearings, sharing proposed maps, and equal access to all data and information.
The proposal will go to committee before being voted on in the house.
